Meet Mr. Fix It

Well here we go! I have made you all wait a little too long. For that I apologize. I know you all have been checking regularly as to when blog four was going to hit the shelves. Well here you go (remember probably isn’t much better than the last one).

This time while coming up with the idea for this, I decided to bring in a good buddy of mine. What you are about to read is an interview with one of my best friends, Zach McBournie, he is also a procrastinator. Full disclosure I told him three weeks ago I had this idea and today we finally did it.

A little background before is probably important, but what do I know. Zach and I have been best friends since middle school. He is the type of guy that would drop anything to help a buddy with something as long as there was no time limit. Seriously though, it was Zach, Towner (you don’t know him yet, but this isn’t about him it is about Zach, so who cares about Towner), and I always together no matter what since middle school. We were always helping each other from Zach doing every one’s wood shop projects to helping each other with girl advice.

Ok I could give you all a million stories but its time to get to the interview. This is my first blog like this, and I am not quite sure the best way to write to write it down. So lets go ahead and wing it.

Me: So Zach I know what you do already but let the listeners in on what you do for a living.

Him: Well I would consider myself an entrepreneur. I own a local restaurant called The Buzz. It is located on the bottom of the South Hill across the street from Fred Meyers. (Side note I’ll allow this free plug he just used on my in this interview. I will also say it is a pretty awesome place to bring the whole family. I will put the address at the end). I have had that for about two years, we are actually planning to open a second location which is pretty cool. (He has great descriptive words I know).

Me: Okay enough about The Buzz lets get to what you recently started doing.

Him: Okay calm down, I had to throw it in there dude! I also recently started my own construction company, ZEM Construction.

Me: That’s what I’m talking about something I can work with, when it comes to my own business. Tell us a little more about it.

Him: I specialize mainly in remodels, but I can do almost anything (he is not exaggerating this nerd can build/rebuild you anything) as far as construction goes from additions, decks, or even give you an awesome fireplace mantel. But my bread and butter is remodels: kitchens, bathrooms, basements, built-in cabinetry things like that.

Me: So what made you decide to get into entrepreneurship?

Him: I realized pretty early on that I’m one of those people that likes to be good at everything as opposed to being great at one thing. I realized that owning a business really allows you to wear a bunch of different hats and learn a bunch of different skills. Instead of specializing in just one thing that you do for the rest of your life. I also get a bunch of joy out of accomplishments that are completely on my own. Before I was a business owner, I was a salesman. I worked off of commission and for me is was hard to grasp that I would do all the work and only make about 10-18 percent. The main reason is I am not a great listener and so working for someone was not for me (Okay this was not exactly what he said but I felt that was what he meant).

Me: So why ZEM?

Him: My name, Zachariah Eugene McBournie. I also wanted something simple, but looks good, easy to spell, and easy to pronounce. I wanted to create something recognizable and at the same time unique. I’m also a huge proponent of it really doesn’t matter what it is called it is all about how you market it and treat your customers. There have been businesses with really ridiculous names but when they do a good job that is what the customers care about more, not the business name.

Me: So what sets ZEM Construction apart from the rest?

Him: I would say the one thing that sets us apart is the honesty and the upfrontness. (Not a real word but let’s go with it). When I go into a job or go through the bidding process, I am completely transparent about how much things are going to cost, what I am charging per hour, and why I am charging this much. The last thing I want is for there to be any surprises for the customer. When I leave the job site they will know exactly what they paid for and why.

Me: Big question… How much do you cost?

Him: I will be completely honest I am not the cheapest out there. I pride myself on the quality of work that I do. In some cases, if you are looking for something really really affordable ZEM Construction is probably not the best fit. I do not have a problem working with people and trying to figure out the most affordable way to go about something but at the end of the day if you want something that is just cheap bare bones lipstick on a pig style, I honestly might not be the best fit for you.

Me: Where is the website so people can start to contact you?

Him: Just go head over to I try to keep up some pictures and videos and links to all the social media ( ) That way you can get an idea of what you are going to get.

Me: I am so over listening to you talk about ZEM! What else do you do with what little time you get when you are not running the businesses? Do not give me the old “send time with my family answer”!

Him: Well man I spend time with my family. Seriously when I am not working, I am with my wife and six-month-old baby boy. Or I am with my extended family, my parents, or my brother and his new fiancé. Congrats Levi and Ashley. (I allowed this to be added).

Me: Well dude thank you for answering it in the most obvious way possible. Congrats on the new business I hope you blow up and I will definitely help in any way I possibly can.

So fans I want you all to go over and check out Zach’s new website. He does amazing things. He truly is an awesome guy who will help you in any way he possibly can.
